So that’s it – sort of !

Well, I’ve achieved my first objective – a web server running on my home PC with a registered domain name and a dynamic DNS service, and it didn’t take too many hours to achieve it. Here’s the nameserver information from cotse.net  http://packetderm.cotse.com/cgi-bin/lookuptools

However, as I’ve prowled around the web looking for help and guidance I’ve realised just how much more I need to find out and how many more things I could develop.

At the moment I’m relying on the built-in XP Firewall  - that was probably perfectly adequate for normal web use, but is it adequate when running a web server ?

I run a small network here with Microsoft Internet Connection Sharing. Would it be better to set up a router using an old PC and sit all the PCs behind it ?

“Ever wonder what you're going to do with that old 486/66 lying in the corner of your closet? Turn it into a router! There are several companies that have created versions of Linux that will fit on a floppy disk that act as routers and firewalls. These programs are usually free. Take that old computer, pop in two network cards configure the Linux router / firewall and you now have yourself reliable router. Sure it takes up more space (and electricity) than a modern hardware router, but at least that old 486 has new life!”  from www.dslwebserver.com/

But this looks a good possibility !
