If
you’re running Windows 98, Personal Web Server is available on your
distribution CD - navigate to /add-ons/pws
and run the setup.exe file.
PWS
was not included with Windows ME. You can install it but you’ll need to
download the Windows NT 4.0 Option Pack for Windows 95 from Microsoft (if you
don’t have a Win98 CD). There are a number of sites on the net which will
guide you through the installation process (try, for example, http://www.webthang.co.uk/tutorials/mark_me/mark_me.htm
)
If
you’re running Windows 2000 or XP Professional Edition you’ll have the much
beefier Internet Information Server (IIS) available. IIS also includes an FTP
server and Mail server. IIS will show on your installed programs as Personal
Web Manager.
XP
Home Edition is not shipped with a web server. If you continue to read the main
text you’ll see how I got round the problem.
